BUU Informatics Advances International Research Collaboration across Thailand, Korea, and Indonesia

🌏🤝BUU Informatics Advances International Research Collaboration across Thailand, Korea, and Indonesia
📅 From 28 September to 2 October 2026, a delegation from the Faculty of Informatics, Burapha University (BUU), together with representatives from Thailand’s public health sector, participated in the GFID Joint Meeting and Related Consultations in the Republic of Indonesia, in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), Republic of Korea.
🌐 The visit formed part of the “Digital Data Exchange Cooperation Project between Korea and Thailand to Guide the Rapid Response of the Global Epidemic,” which aims to strengthen cooperation in digital data exchange, data analytics, and information technology to support infectious disease surveillance and rapid outbreak response. The initiative also seeks to expand the existing Thailand–Korea collaboration toward a broader Korea–ASEAN research network.
👥 The delegation included Prof. Suwanna Rasmequan, Prof. Krisana Chinnasarn, and Prof. Athita Onuean from the Faculty of Informatics, Burapha University, together with Dr. Seesai Yeesoonsang from the Division of Epidemiology and Ms. Sasithan Maeakhian, Public Health Technical Officer, Professional Level.
🤝 Throughout the meetings, the delegation presented progress from ongoing research projects, as well as new research plans and project proposals, while exchanging perspectives with partner organizations in Indonesia. Key activities included consultations with the Indonesian Ministry of Health, discussions with Bio Diaspora, and meetings with potential partner institutions for future collaborative research. The proposed research directions and implementation plans received positive feedback, along with valuable recommendations for refining the research framework and advancing the next phase of collaboration.
🌏 The delegation also received valuable support and insights from Prof. Insung Ahn, Prof. Beti from the Indonesian Medical Education and Research Institute (IMERI), Universitas Indonesia, and Dr. Abdurrahman from ABVC. These connections represent an important foundation for expanding research collaboration among Thailand, the Republic of Korea, and Indonesia.
✈️ Despite adverse weather conditions in Thailand that caused several flight delays—from the originally scheduled afternoon departure to an actual departure at approximately 10:30 p.m.—the delegation continued its journey to fulfill its mission and participate in the scheduled activities.
🔬 The visit therefore went beyond reporting research progress. It marked another important step toward strengthening a regional collaborative network in data, science, technology, and public health, while laying a concrete foundation for future joint research projects. Four Key Areas for Future Collaboration
💡 A major highlight of the meetings was the presentation and discussion of four key areas for continued research and development:
1. 🔗 API / Data Infrastructure – AIDA Platform
The AIDA Platform provides a data infrastructure for collecting, integrating, and delivering infectious disease data through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). It supports data analytics, visualization, and AI applications. The platform currently covers 56 datasets across 14 diseases, incorporating data from multiple countries.
2. 📊 Disease Prediction
The research focuses on developing predictive models to analyze historical disease data and forecast disease trends. The goal is to strengthen disease surveillance, early warning capabilities, and evidence-based public health decision-making.
3. 🤖 LLMs for Infectious Disease
The collaboration includes the development of an AI Agent Chatbot powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) for infectious disease information. By integrating data from Thailand and the Republic of Korea, the system is designed to assist public health practitioners, researchers, and general users in searching, understanding, and interpreting infectious disease information more efficiently.
4. 🌏 ASEAN AI-Based Infectious Disease Surveillance
The fourth area focuses on expanding the initiative toward an ASEAN-level AI-based infectious disease surveillance network. The proposed approach aims to connect data across participating countries to support outbreak detection, disease forecasting, and early warning, while respecting the principle of data sovereignty, allowing each country to maintain control over its own data.
🚀 Through these initiatives, the Faculty of Informatics, Burapha University continues to strengthen its role in connecting Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, digital infrastructure, and public health applications with international research networks. The Thailand–Korea collaboration, now extending toward Indonesia and the wider ASEAN region, provides a foundation for future joint research, knowledge exchange, human resource development, and technology-driven approaches to regional infectious disease surveillance and response.
